Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of different anemia patterns in CKD patients.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the Outpatient Department of General Medicine, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar from 1st July to 31st December, 2023. Non-probability consecutive sampling was employed. Demographic data was collected and anemia was evaluated through Complete Blood Counts for each participant. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 23.
Results: The study included a cohort of 209 participants with an average age of 40.78 ± 6.37 years and a mean BMI of 26.12 ± 4.11 kg/m². Among the participants, 72.2% were male and 27.8% were female. The most common CKD patterns were normocytic (41.1%), hypochromic microcytic (32.5%), and hypochromic macrocytic (26.3%). The majority of participants (78.9%) had experienced CKD for over one year. No significant association was found between the types of anemia in CKD and gender, underlying cause of CKD, age, BMI, or duration of the disease.
Conclusion: Our study highlights the prevalence of various types of anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) among participants, with normocytic anemia emerging as the most prevalent, followed by hypochromic and hyperchromic patterns. Additionally, longitudinal studies could provide insights into the progression and management of anemia in CKD patients over time.
