The title of the book is derived from the following verse of the Holy Quran: “And who better than God can spread the tincture of a dye; and Him we adore”.(2:138). The essays preserved in this volume were published between 1981 to 2008, but the author informs us that his study of Islam (and Malay mysticism) began in 1947. This has made the placing of this book somewhat problematic. Comparative Religion is a discipline in which the similarities and the dissimilarities between religions is highlighted in equal measure, though colonial or political considerations may wish to enhance one over the other.
