Abstract

Education system has recognized importance of the independent and self-learning. The assessment practices in Pakistan, however, remain largely summative in nature, offering rare opportunities to the learners for self-assessment to have timely and constructive feedback, for their improved performance. To address this issue, self- assessment was introduced to have empirical evidence through investigating into the effect of learners’ self-assessment, which is the key component of formative assessment, to enhance students’ learning. For the purpose, population of the study are 7th graders, of which sampled group was randomly selected for group A and B, through mechanical match, then randomly assigned as control and experimental groups, of which one was treated through routine instruction and other through adding self-assessment practices, respectively. During self-assessment, learners went through their own performance on the test, of which later they did self-review, to find learning gaps and to strategize learning improvement. Afterwards, an achievement test, on the given learning tasks was developed and conducted at the pre and post stages of the treatments, for data collection. The data was analyzed, where results revealed visible improvement in learning of those who engaged themselves in self-assessment as compared to those underwent summative assessment. The results supported the argument that, ‘self-assessment integrated class instruction’, enhances and promotes independent learning among the students. The results of the study encourage implementation of self-assessment practices into classroom for effective and efficient teaching-learning processes.
