Abstract

This study explores the concept of Imla (spelling) in Urdu, analyzing its linguistic significance, historical evolution, and challenges. Imla originates from the Arabic word Imlā’, but in Urdu, it is commonly written without the hamzah. The study emphasizes that accurate spelling ensures proper pronunciation and maintains linguistic coherence. It discusses the relationship between Imla and Rasm-ul-Khat (script), highlighting that both play a crucial role in language standardization. The research also examines historical reforms in Urdu Imla, with key contributions from scholars like Maulana Ahsan Marharvi, Dr. Abdul Sattar Siddiqui, and Rasheed Hasan Khan. A major challenge in Urdu spelling is the incorrect pronunciation of Arabic letters, leading to frequent writing errors. The paper concludes that standardized spelling rules are essential for preserving linguistic uniformity and preventing variations that can disrupt language clarity.
