Abstract

This paper explores the evolution and methodology of terminology formation (istilahāt sāzī) in the Urdu language, emphasizing its importance for intellectual and linguistic modernization in response to advancements in science, technology, and global communication. Beginning with colonial-era reforms and institutions like Fort William College and Osmania University, and continuing through post-independence efforts in Pakistan, the study examines various approaches to term creation—ranging from Arabic-Persian derivation to English borrowings and hybrid methods reflecting Urdu’s diverse character. It analyzes linguistic processes such as compounding, affixation, and semantic adaptation, and argues for terminology that is context-sensitive, user-friendly, and culturally relevant. The paper ultimately advocates for a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and future-oriented strategy to ensure that Urdu terminology remains authentic yet practically applicable in contemporary academic and social contexts.
