Abstract

This paper explores English language learner’s perception of learning English language through English poetry at a graduate level. Since poetry has great variety, it is a powerful tool for learning any language. It is a qualitative study in which phenomenological research design was used. The data were collected through a focus-group interview followed by non-participant observation. The findings show that poetry is great for learning English language. It helps students to increase their vocabulary, sentence structure, pronunciation, reading skills, etc. Possible future tasks and suggestions involve cross-cultural research, follow-up studies, technical knowledge and enhanced teaching concepts. Teachers and educators can go on extending language-related activities where students can enhance their language interaction with other languages, the culture, and even research and development in this line to build more practices and educational prospects.


Research Objective

To identify students' perception of learning English through English poetry and to explore the importance of using English poetry for learning English language.


Methodology

Qualitative approach using a phenomenological research design. Data was collected through focus-group interviews with 8 graduate-level students and non-participant observation of 5 English language classes where poetry was used for teaching. Purposive sampling was used to select participants from different departments.

Discussion

The study supports the idea that poetry is a powerful tool for English language learning, aligning with socio-cultural theories of language acquisition. Poetry's rich vocabulary, diverse sentence structures, and rhythmic nature contribute to language development. Its cultural content also provides valuable insights into English-speaking societies.

Learning English through poetry significantly improves vocabulary, sentence structure, pronunciation, and reading skills. It also enhances awareness of English society and culture. Students generally find poetry-based activities engaging and beneficial for language acquisition.


Conclusion

Learning English through poetry offers numerous advantages, including enhanced language skills and cultural understanding. Careful selection of poems and engaging activities can foster positive student attitudes and improve overall language proficiency.
