Abstract

This article explores the contribution of Shaykh Khalil Ahmad al-Saharanpuri (may Allah have mercy on him) to the principles of Hadith jurisprudence (Fiqh al-Hadith) through his renowned commentary Badhl al-Majhud fi Hall Sunan Abi Dawud. Shaykh al-Saharanpuri was a distinguished scholar and an authority in Hadith and its jurisprudential implications. His commentary stands as one of the most comprehensive and methodologically sound explanations of Sunan Abi Dawud, reflecting a deep understanding of Hadith classification, contextual interpretation, reconciliation between seemingly contradictory narrations, and derivation of legal rulings.
The study highlights the methodological approaches employed by the Shaykh in addressing narrators’ reliability, chains of transmission (isnad), textual analysis (matn), and jurisprudential reasoning grounded in classical Hanafi principles. It also examines his contribution to the development of Hadith-based legal reasoning and his unique integration of Hadith sciences with juristic insight. This article demonstrates that Badhl al-Majhud is not merely a commentary, but a foundational work in Hadith jurisprudence, preserving traditional scholarship while addressing practical juristic needs.
Through this study, the depth and precision of Shaykh al-Saharanfuri’s scholarship become evident, affirming his pivotal role in the preservation and application of Prophetic traditions in the legal framework of Islamic jurisprudence.
