Abstract

A renowned German short story writer Franz Kafka and a well-known Urdu fiction writer Saadat Hassan Manto belong to different ages, countries and languages but surprisingly there are many similarities found in their literary works. Writings of these both writers carry tragic themes along with other literary fearures like depiction of sexual desires, realism, symbolism, psycho analysis and blunt expression of progressive ideas. The stories of Kafka and Manto reveal the common characteristics as failures in school, troublesome domestic issues, carelessness of fathers, biting criticism of people, infamy in society, allegations of erotic descriptions, legal proceedings, drunkenness, psychological problems and effects of religious extremism. They have opened the new horizons of literary debates for resesrchers and critics who will keep bringing various explanations of their  works.
