Abstract

This research article presents a comparative study of the linguistic discussions found in Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and other famous Sharh-e-Bukhari. It highlights how Fath al-Bari uniquely integrates detailed lexical, grammatical, and morphological analysis in understanding Hadith vocabulary, while also linking these linguistic insights to jurisprudential rulings. Compared to other commentaries such as Umdat al-Qari, Irshad al-Sari, and Sharh Ibn Battal, Fath al-Bari provides a more comprehensive, precise, and critical approach towards linguistic explanation. Ibn Hajar’s methodology includes citing classical Arabic dictionaries, explaining word derivations, presenting multiple meanings with context-based preferences, and engaging in scholarly critique. Other commentators generally offer simpler, more concise linguistic notes with less emphasis on detailed root analysis or comparative meanings. This study shows the distinctive contribution of Fath al-Bari in enriching the linguistic understanding of Hadith and its impact on interpretation and legal deduction.
