The Kufan school of Tafseer holds a significant place in Islamic intellectual history. It is primarily known for its emphasis on interpreting the verses of the Qur'an, particularly the legal (Ahkam) verses. The scholars of Kufah focused on deriving legal rulings from the Qur'anic texts, with a strong foundation in the methodology of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. This school also emphasized the importance of accurate Qur'anic recitation, with notable Qur'anic readers like Asim ibn Abi al-Najud, Hamzah ibn Habib, and Ali ibn Hamzah al-Kisai, who were influenced by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud’s teaching. Furthermore, the Kufan approach to Tafseer was characterized by caution and piety (wara'), where scholars avoided making speculative interpretations without certainty. The cautious approach is rooted in Abdullah ibn Mas'ud’s influence, who advised his followers to base their opinions only on authentic knowledge of the Qur'an and Sunnah. The Kufan scholars developed a distinctive approach to Qur'anic exegesis, focusing on legal and doctrinal aspects rather than general commentary. This methodology contributed significantly to Islamic jurisprudence and Tafseer, with lasting effects on the broader Muslim intellectual tradition.
