Abstract

The current study aims to examine the relationship between self-objectification, social comparison and eating patterns among college students. Correlational research design was used and the participants were approached by Purposive sampling technique within the age range of 16-19 years. These assessment measures were used; Self Objectification Questionnaire, The Physical Appearance Comparison Scale and Eating Attitude Test. Correlation analysis was carried out with the findings indicated a significant positive relationship between self-objectification, social comparison and disruptive eating patterns. Moreover, regression analysis showed that self-objectification and social comparison were the leading factors towards disruptive eating attitude among college students. The results also indicated that women were more engaged in social comparison as compared to men. This study has implications for both college students and mental health professionals to develop effective mindful techniques which will assist them to develop healthy eating patterns and prevention of mental issues later on.
