Abstract
The radicalization of young people is a complex issue which has become a critical challenge for Pakistan over the years and one that has garnered extensive attention globally owing to the growing number of terrorist attacks and extremist activities in the country as well as across the region. Pakistan has the fifth largest population in the world; 64 per cent of this population is below the age of 30 and these young voters will play a crucial role in any political set-up in Pakistan. This demographic section has the potential to contribute to the country's economic growth and development; however the situation also poses significant challenges, including the risk of the radicalization of the young. This paper is an attempt to discuss and analyse this phenomenon, its causes and consequences, and the policy options available to counter this challenge. The study argues that this radicalization is not the product of a single factor, but is embedded in the broader socio-economic, political, and strategic milieu of the country, with far-reaching effects for Pakistan as well as for the international community in the form of terrorist attacks and extremist activities. This study suggests that, to counter the radicalization of these young people, Pakistan needs to adopt a multi-pronged approach that addresses the root causes of the issue.
