Abstract

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi (b. 1952) is a prominent figure in contemporary religious literature, and his thoughts have had a profound impact on this era. His debates with traditional religious scholars have been extensive,and the diversity of topics he has explored is unparalleled. The opportunities and circumstances he has had have been rare for non-traditional religious figures, and he has been able to flourish despite being within the traditional religious framework. His unique perspective on ḥadīth and sunnah is a significant aspect of his thought, and his disagreements with traditional scholars stem from this understanding. While his engagement with traditional scholars has been broad, his concept of ḥadīth and sunnah is the key factor that distinguishes him. This aspect of his thought has been the subject of much critical analysis. This article explores how his understanding of ḥadīth and sunnah resonates with that of the Kharijites, a heretical sect in Islamic history.
