Abstract

The present research study presents a Marxist feminist analysis of Kiley Reid’s Such a Fun Age, focusing on how intersecting structures of capitalism, patriarchy, and racism affect the lives of marginalized women. Through close reading and textual analysis, the research explores the socio-economic struggles of Emira Tucker, an African American woman working as a babysitter in a white, affluent household. The novel reflects the systemic challenges faced by women of color in navigating issues of gender discrimination, class disparity, and racial injustice. Drawing on Friedrich Engels’ Theory of Marxist Feminism, the study argues that women’s oppression is deeply rooted in economic exploitation and male dominance. The research further emphasizes that true emancipation is attainable through economic independence and the dismantling of structural inequalities. Reid’s narrative offers a realistic portrayal of contemporary womanhood, highlighting that despite social advancements, women especially those from racial minorities still face systemic barriers. This study contributes to feminist literary criticism by shedding light on class-based gender oppression in the modern American context.
