Abstract

This research examines the key strengths and notable shortcomings of Quranic exegesis in the first half of the ninth century AH. It highlights the era’s focus on Tafsir education, the diversity of interpretations by single scholars, and the comprehensive, critical, and innovative approaches taken. The study also notes positive trends like reduced reliance on Israeli narratives. On the other hand, it identifies limitations such as the lack of Salafi interpretations, scarcity of non-Arabic Tafsirs, prevalence of Zaydi scholars, excessive allegorical interpretation of divine attributes, the loss of many works, and the tendency towards brevity. The research concludes with a balanced assessment of the period’s impact on Quranic studies.
