This research explores the concepts of superstition and soothsaying (Kahānah) in the light of the commentary literature on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. While Islam strongly condemns all forms of shirk (polytheism) and irrational beliefs, these practices have nonetheless persisted in many Muslim societies throughout history. The study aims to examine how classical commentators of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī , including Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī, al-‘Aynī, and Al-Qasṭallānī, interpreted and explained the hadiths related to superstitious beliefs and soothsaying.
The research investigates both theological and social dimensions of these practices, clarifying the Islamic stance on magic, fortune-telling, astrology, omens, and other related phenomena. By critically analyzing the commentarial discourse, the study highlights the scholarly approaches used to combat irrationality and preserve the core message of Islamic monotheism (tawḥīd).
The research style in the paper is narrative and analytical. This research relies on primary sources (commentaries on Sahih al-Bukhari) and relevant secondary literature. It offers a scholarly response to the persistence of superstitious tendencies in modern times and emphasizes the relevance of prophetic teachings in confronting such challenges. The findings aim to promote awareness, correct misconceptions, and contribute to intellectual efforts in purifying Islamic belief systems.
