The interpretation of the Holy Qur’an is a sacred and intricate discipline that has captivated scholars since the earliest days of Islam. From the moment divine revelation began, the noble Companions not only committed the Qur’an to memory but also absorbed its meanings directly from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Thus, the science of Tafsir emerged organically from this foundational era, beginning with the Companions and gradually evolving into structured schools of exegesis. Among these early schools, the Madinan School of Tafsir holds particular significance due to its direct association with the eminent Companions nurtured in the Prophet’s close company. This school is characterized by its emphasis on explaining Qur’anic verses in the light of Hadith, articulating legal rulings, and applying scriptural guidance to practical life. The scholars of Madinah did not restrict Tafsir to linguistic interpretations alone; they considered context, causes of revelation, and real-life implications. One of the most distinguished figures of this school is Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him), a revered scribe of revelation whose deep understanding of the Qur’an was affirmed by the Prophet himself. His approach to Tafsir reflects deep contemplation, spiritual insight, and strict adherence to prophetic tradition, making him a key figure in understanding the intellectual foundations of the Madinan School.
