Abstract

The aggravating challenge of water crisis has become a serious area of concern for governments, organizations and scholars all across the world. Despite the work conducted on water pollution, water storage and the quality of water in Pakistan, however, there is lack of sufficient research and data to understand the situation of water governance and its management within the country. Therefore, this paper focuses on how water governance theory is influenced by different institutions and policies and what can be done to overcome this issue in Pakistan. The problematic areas have been identified in this paper as issues with laws and regulations, institutional problems, capacity, financial, information, administrative, accountability, objective and monitoring. This paper concludes that the National Water Policy 2018, objectives can be achieved only if there is coherence, engagement of stakeholders in implementation, a well-designed regulatory framework, adequate, authentic and accessible information for all, and if there will be sufficient capacity, integrity and transparency present in the water governance system.
