Abstract

The passage of the Punjab Local Government Act (PLGA) 2019 by Punjab Assembly is being lauded as a major step to take service delivery to the ordinary citizens and enhance citizens participation in the decision-making for the neighborhoods. The politicians representing Punjab government are informing the citizens to make better use of various provisions of the Act, particularly the provisions related to decision-making, transparency, and accountability. The government has promised to surpass the earlier governments financial allocations in significant ways. The government has repeatedly assured citizens that the local governments will carry out most of the development projects. All of these commitments are promising for the citizens in the province who are dissatisfied with the decision-making processes and service delivery. This policy review intends to advance citizens perspective on various provisions of the PLGA 2019. Its purpose is to suggest the legislators and Local Government Department to seek ways to address citizens concerns to realize its promise.
