Abstract

The Poet Laureate of India, Ustād Ibrāhīm Zauq, in his poetry, has employed such a vast treasure of intricate and sophisticated words that it almost necessitates an exclusive lexicon for comprehension. His diction reflects remarkable erudition, grandeur of expression, and scholarly depth, revealing a poet deeply rooted in the classical tradition of linguistic mastery. However, this very richness sometimes gives rise to verbal strangeness, dissonance, and complexity of style, which may distance the reader from spontaneous emotional engagement. These stylistic choices, while enhancing the intellectual depth of his poetry, can also make it appear somewhat elaborate and obscure for delicate aesthetic sensibilities. Zauq himself was fully conscious of this tendency, once remarking that “when meaning became difficult, the verse seemed to have improved.
