Abstract

Social media has deeply penetrated in to lives of billions of people across the world. People spend a lot of time on social media to relieve their stress. However, the impact of a personality trait i.e. narcissism has largely been overlooked in affecting the relationship between depression and compulsive use of social media.  Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the impact of depression on the compulsive use of social media. Data were collected from university students in Pakistan. SPSS and Smart PLS were used for data analysis. The results showed that depression had a significant positive influence of the compulsive use of social media. Additionally, narcissism moderated the relationship between depression and compulsive use of social media. The findings have several implications for theory and practice.
