Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of linguistic diversity in the Moroccan environment, which accommodates both national and foreign languages. Since languages vary in their material and symbolic values, their social roles tend to either complement one another or engage in competition and conflict. Language policies that are aware of actual sociolinguistic challenges can help reduce potential tensions between interconnected sociolinguistic components, thereby ensuring balance in the linguistic market. However, this is not the case in Morocco, where the French language monopolizes vital roles, while national languages, including the officially recognized Arabic and Amazigh, remain marginalized.
