Abstract

This research article thoroughly explores the concept and reality of Karamah within Islamic theology, drawing specifically from Sheikh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlavi's renowned book, "Lama'at al-Tanqih fi Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih." It defines Karamah as an extraordinary act that Allah manifests through a Wali (a pious servant), serving as a sign of their sainthood and spiritual proximity to Allah. The text clearly distinguishes between Karamah and a Mu'jizah (a miracle), with the latter being exclusive to prophets to prove their prophethood, while a Karamah is a divine gift for the saints. It is emphasized that Karamah occurs by Allah's will alone, not by the Wali's intention. According to the belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jama'ah, the reality of Karamah is substantiated by evidence from the Qur'an and authentic Hadith, including various accounts from the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) that demonstrate these miraculous events as a manifestation of Allah's absolute power. The article also addresses and refutes the stance of deniers, such as the Mu'tazilah, by highlighting that their position contradicts the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah. Ultimately, the article concludes that a saint's greatest Karamah is their steadfast adherence to the Shari'ah and their sincerity in worship, and that the occurrence of Karamah serves as a testament to the saint's truthfulness and profound connection with Allah.
