Background
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a major public health concern globally, associated with high morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. Lifestyle modification plays a critical role in the prevention and progression control of CKD. However, patient knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding lifestyle modification remain limited, particularly in low-resource settings like Pakistan.
Aim
This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding lifestyle modification for the prevention of CKD among patients admitted to the dialysis unit of Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore.
Methods
A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional design was adopted. Using Taro Yamane’s formula, a sample of 180 CKD patients was selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire comprising demographic variables and KAP-related items. Ethical approval and institutional permission were obtained, and patient confidentiality was assured. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 22, applying descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, skewness, and kurtosis.
Results
Findings revealed generally low knowledge scores regarding CKD prevention, with mean values ranging from 1.39 to 1.87. Attitudes were inconsistent, with some supportive views observed, though responses clustered around lower agreement levels. Practices regarding lifestyle modification were poor to moderate, with highest engagement in PMCKD3 (Mean = 2.75) and lowest in PMCKD4 (Mean = 1.39). Awareness of CKD risk factors was limited, with patients showing higher recognition of few items but significant gaps overall.
Conclusion
The study concluded that CKD patients had insufficient knowledge, weak attitudes, and poor practices concerning lifestyle modification. Strengthening patient education, awareness campaigns, and structured preventive interventions are urgently needed to reduce CKD progression and associated complications in Pakistan.
