Abstract

AbstractObjective: To examine the effect of aerobic exercises on pain in patients with diabetic painful peripheralneuropathy.Material and Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in the District Headquarters Hospital,Dera Ghazi Khan, Pakistan. Twenty-eight patients with diabetic painful peripheral neuropathy participated inaerobic exercise for 16 weeks thrice weekly. The brief pain inventory-diabetic peripheral neuropathy (BPIDPN)was used to assess pain and interference with daily activities pre-and post-intervention. The comparison ofpre-intervention versus post-intervention outcome was analyzed using SPSS 20. As sample size was less than30, the wilcoxon signed-rank test was used. An alpha level of 0.05 or below was chosen for significance. Results: A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed significant reductions in worst, least, average, and currentpain levels over 24 hours post-intervention. Pain-related interference in general activity, mood, walkingability, sleep, normal work, relationships, and enjoyment of life also significantly decreased. The sampleconsisted of 28 patients, mostly female (53.6%), with a mean age of 57.6 ± 6.1 years. Conclusion: The study showed that aerobic exercises significantly reduced pain and its interference withdaily activities, enhancing mobility, mood, work, sleep, relationships, and overall quality of life in patientswith painful diabetic neuropathyKeywords: Aerobic exercises; Diabetic painful peripheral neuropathy; Type 2 diabetes mellitus. How to cite: Kanwal S, Waqas MS, Afzal H, Masood MAH, Rafiq S, Mehmood S.
