Abstract

Objective: To compare the short-term and long-term outcomes of transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP)hernioplasty and Lichtenstein hernioplasty in the treatment of recurrent inguinal hernias.Material and Methods: This prospective comparative study was conducted at Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital,Bahawalpur, from 01-10-21 to 30-11-24 on 50 patients who presented with recurrent unilateral inguinal herniaafter anterior repair and were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A underwent Lichtenstein's hernioplasty, and Group B underwent transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) hernioplasty. Data was collected on a pro formaand was analysed using SPSS version 27. A chi-square test was employed, and a p-value of less than 0.05 wasdeemed significant. Results: On the right side and following direct inguinal hernia surgery, recurrence was more frequent. GroupB experienced a considerably longer surgical duration (P value < 0.01). Group A experienced noticeablymore acute pain than Group B.Conclusion: Compared to Lichtenstein hernioplasty, TAPP has a lower chance of recurrence and chronic pain, but it has a long learning curve, a longer duration of surgery, and can be done only in general anaesthesia, forwhich elderly patients are unfit. So, TAPP Younger individuals may consider hernioplasty, while older patientswho experience recurrence following anterior closure of an inguinal hernia should consider Lichtenstein'shernioplasty. Keywords: hernia. lichtenstein's hernioplasty, transabdominal preperitoneal hernioplasty, recurrent inguinalhernia, chronic painHow to cite: Iqbal MN, Mengal MZ, Aslam M, Anwar M, Kamran CM, Sindhu AA.
