This analysis, which is based on the methodological approach of Leo Spitzer, is a stylistic analysis of the sonnet “Bright Star” by the Romantic poet John Keats with a specific emphasis on the interaction between the linguistic form and the psychological substance. The discussion evidence that the choices made by Keats in syntax, diction, imagery, patterns of sound, and overall poetic structure of the poem are used in concert to highlight the underlying dialectics of accepting human mutability and yearning to live in eternal continuity. Through the notion of inner form introduced by Spitzer, the present study illustrates that the textual patterning of the poem contains the emotional vulnerability of the speaker and metaphysical desire. In resonating with and intensifying such affective and thematic interests, Keats uses stylistic means to invalidate any belief that such effects are mere ornamental strategies. The paper finally argues that “Bright Star” is more than a simple reflection of love and permanence and is in fact a meticulously crafted embodiment of inner spiritual struggle, with its conflict being expressed as both a structural form and as verbal description.
