Abstract

Research writing is an essential component of undergraduate education, yet it continues to pose significant challenges for students across diverse contexts. This paper reviews the Undergraduate Education Policy (UGEP, 2023) of Pakistan, focusing on its objectives and implications for undergraduate research writing. It then explores the key difficulties students encounter in the Pakistani higher education system, such as inadequate academic writing proficiency, limited supervisory support, and resource constraints. To situate these issues globally, the paper also examines international perspectives on graduate and undergraduate research writing challenges, including linguistic barriers, lack of critical thinking, and limited exposure to research culture. The review highlights commonalities between Pakistani and global contexts, while also identifying unique challenges shaped by local academic practices and institutional structures. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for policy-driven initiatives, faculty development, and targeted pedagogical interventions to support students’ research writing skills.
