Abstract

Automated patient repositioning systems are crucial for bedridden patients to prevent pressure ulcer formation, support respiratory and circulatory functions. They reduce the risks associated with manual patient handling and not only lead to better patient comfort and quality of life, but also reduce the caregiver burden. In this study, we provide the design of a low-cost patient repositioning system with various positioning and timing features for customization to suit the needs of patients and caregivers. The prototype is designed and tested for structural strength using finite element analysis software. The control algorithm is designed to offer customization along with safety features. The circuitry is designed to control the sensors and actuators with feedback loop. Finally, anecdotal feedback was obtained from 14 patients and 11 caregivers regarding the usability and effectiveness of the prototype. All the participants considered the system to have acceptable usability. It is concluded that the proposed design of the low-cost patient repositioning system may be used for production for indigenous use and export for fulfilling national need and contributing to national economy, respectively.
