Abstract

This research attempts to bridge a gap between foreign translators and the natives. In contrast to established notions regarding translation, the study challenges natives’ criticism on foreign representatives and attempts to rationalize the creative endeavours of translators. By undertaking dynamic equivalence as an instrument for creating intercultural dialogue between distinct traditions, i.e., English and Pushto. This research, by assessing the resistive attitude of the natives, offers an intervention between traditional beliefs and progressive ideals. Referencing Olaf Caroe’s translations of Khushal Khan Khattak’s poetry, the translator’s interpretive freedom is accounted for by drawing comparison between the Source Text (ST), Caroe’s translation and the literal rendition of the selected poems. Moreover, this study examines translator’s creative adjustments while assimilating culture-specific items (CSIs) to maintain the intent of the ST. Translation is not a passive act of transference but a continuous bargain among different horizons of expectation between the author, the translator and the reader. This negotiation cultivates a dynamic space where linguistic and cultural elements converge, producing a hybrid sphere of meaning, where the translator and readers’ interaction formulate a supposed Third space for translation. A transformative site where the essence of ST is preserved by the infusion of different traditions, while recognizing the translator not merely as a passive conveyor of meaning but a mediator of cultural nuances.
