Abstract

This study critically explores the hadith commentary style of Nawab Siddiq Hasan Khan in Al-Sirāj al-Wahhāj, with particular focus on his approach to isnād (chain of transmission). The paper highlights how Khan, while influenced by traditional scholarship, demonstrates a meticulous and independent methodology in examining narrators, assessing the integrity of chains, and resolving conflicts within reports. Unlike merely descriptive commentaries, Al-Sirāj al-Wahhāj reveals Khan’s investigative precision and engagement with early hadith critics. This research evaluates his scholastic rigor in validating transmission chains and traces the theoretical influences behind his evaluative framework. The analysis positions Khan as not only a commentator but a discerning muhaddith, who advanced the science of isnād in the subcontinental tradition.
