The compilation of the Qur’ān during the caliphate of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (RA) is one of the most pivotal milestones in the preservation of the Islamic revelation. Orientalist scholars such as F. Buhl and Régis Blachère, however, have raised significant objections regarding this historical event. They attempted to cast doubt on the authenticity of the ʿUthmānic Codex by claiming that the scribes involved in the Qur’ānic Compilation Committee were inexperienced, unqualified, and merely acted under the authority of Caliph ʿUthmān (RA). This study provides a critical examination of these objections through a detailed analysis of both Islamic primary sources and the Orientalist narrative. It demonstrates that the compilation was not an arbitrary or politically motivated process but a meticulously organized effort carried out under the supervision of the most distinguished Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. These individuals were recognized for their mastery of the Qur’ān, linguistic expertise, and unwavering integrity. Moreover, the method employed—based on collective verification, cross-checking of manuscripts, and reliance on authentic oral traditions—ensured that no textual alteration or corruption could take place. The unanimous acceptance of this effort by the Companions and the Muslim community at large further invalidates the Orientalist claims. By highlighting the systematic methodology, scholarly rigor, and spiritual trust that underpinned the Uthmānic compilation, this study underscores that the criticisms of Buhl and Blachère are baseless and reflect methodological weaknesses. Ultimately, the Uthmānic Codex remains an unparalleled achievement in the history of textual preservation and continues to stand as a testament to the authenticity of the Qur’ān.
