Abstract

This research article explores the multidimensional relationship between Urdu and Persian, focusing on their historical, linguistic, literary, and cultural intersections. Persian, as the language of scholarship and administration in South Asia for centuries, significantly influenced the evolution of Urdu in terms of vocabulary, script, idioms, and stylistic expression. The study highlights how Urdu assimilated Persian literary forms such as ghazal, masnavi, and qasida, thereby shaping its poetic identity and aesthetic richness. The research further examines the cultural exchanges that strengthened these bonds, including architecture, music, calligraphy, and Sufi traditions, which embedded Persian thought and aesthetics deeply into Urdu cultural life. By critically analyzing the contributions of classical poets, writers, and thinkers, the article demonstrates that the Urdu–Persian relationship is not merely historical but continues to play a role in contemporary linguistic and literary practices. The findings suggest that this interaction reflects a symbiotic cultural process where both languages nurtured each other, creating a unique linguistic and literary synthesis that remains central to South Asian identity. This study, therefore, offers a comprehensive understanding of the shared heritage of Urdu and Persian, emphasizing its relevance for future linguistic and literary research.
