Abstract

This study investigates the ecolinguistics dimensions of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, focusing on the interplay between language, nature, and power. Adopting a qualitative approach, the analysis examines how Shakespeare employs linguistic choices to reflect ecological awareness and human interaction with the natural world. The findings reveal that language in the play is closely tied to social hierarchy, where authority and governance are reinforced through discourse. At the same time, the text highlights ecological concerns, portraying nature as both a source of power and an entity deserving respect. Shakespeare emphasizes the preservation of natural resources while critiquing their exploitation, suggesting an early recognition of ecological balance and sustainability. By situating The Tempest within an ecolinguistic framework, this study contributes to the growing field of literary ecocriticism and demonstrates how linguistic analysis can uncover deeper ecological and ethical meanings in canonical texts.
