Abstract

Hyperthyroidism, a disorder caused by excessive secretion of thyroid hormones, not only affects physical health but also has profound implications for psychological functioning and quality of life. Despite growing international evidence, little research has explored the lived experiences of hyperthyroid patients in Pakistan. The present study adopted a qualitative research design using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to investigate the psychosocial impact of hyperthyroidism. A purposive sample of ten adults (five male, five female), aged 22–50, diagnosed for at least six months, participated in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed five superordinate themes: (1) emotional dysregulation and anxiety, (2) cognitive impairment and “brain fog,” (3) functional limitations and social strain, (4) residual post-treatment challenges, and (5) coping strategies and resilience. Participants reported persistent fatigue, mood instability, memory problems, and stigma, even after receiving medical treatment. Findings suggest that medical interventions alone are insufficient to restore psychosocial well-being. The study highlights the need for integrated biopsychosocial care models, culturally sensitive psychoeducation, and gender-responsive support programs to improve the quality of life of hyperthyroid patients in Pakistan.
