Abstract

Despite the critical role of Personal Protective Equipment in preventing workplace injuries, non-compliance persists in the construction industry. This study investigates the contributing factors influencing PPE non-compliance among construction workers in Pakistan. A quantitative research design was employed, using a structured questionnaire distributed via WhatsApp for greater accessibility. The survey included 15 close-ended questions across three sections: demographics, PPE awareness and knowledge and key factors affecting PPE compliance. Sixty construction workers participated in the study, selected using convenience sampling. Findings revealed that while most participants were aware of PPE requirements, actual compliance was inconsistent. Key reasons for non-compliance included inadequate safety training, lack of enforcement, lack of awareness about the importance of PPE usage and insufficient penalties upon violation. Furthermore, employer and supervisor attitudes toward safety significantly impacted worker behavior. This study offers valuable insights into key barriers to PPE compliance and underscores the need for improved training, enforcement, and cultural changes within the construction industry.
