Islam is a religion that upholds the dignity and honor of humanity. A faith that teaches kindness and good conduct towards every individual cannot endorse any principles that contradict human nobility. Just as all other segments of society are entitled to their rights, minorities in an Islamic state are also guaranteed every right that can be envisioned in a just and welfare-oriented society. The foundation of minority rights rests on the absolute rejection of compulsion in matters of faith.
The importance of minority rights and responsibilities in an Islamic society can be clearly understood from the blessed saying of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: “Beware! Whoever wrongs a non-Muslim citizen, usurps his rights, burdens him with more than he can bear, or takes anything from him without his consent, I will stand against him on the Day of Judgment.”
This is not merely a warning but a legal principle that was practically implemented in the Prophet’s ﷺ era in the State of Madinah and continued to be upheld thereafter. It has now become an integral part of the constitutional framework of an Islamic state. The Prophetic traditions also provide a clear and firm roadmap for safeguarding the rights of minorities. This paper will, therefore, elaborate on the social and economic rights of minorities in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
