Man is, by nature, inclined towards haste, as stated in the Qur’an, Surah Bani Isra’il (17:11). However, this tendency becomes harmful when it influences conscious decision-making. Emotional impulsiveness is detrimental not only to the individual but also to the social and moral order. Often, a person, carried away by anger or emotions, takes a hasty step or decides that later results in regret and harm. Therefore, instead of rushing into matters, one should adopt reflection and wisdom, so that actions are directed rightly and yield fruitful and lasting outcomes. Haste deprives man of consciousness and wisdom; it is a sign of emotional weakness and a failure to employ reason. It leads to loss not only in world affairs but also in the Hereafter. Moderation and balance are among the finest moral qualities, and true success lies in subordinating one’s emotions to reason.
In Islamic teachings, patience (ṣabr) and wisdom are regarded as noble virtues. The secret of human success and inner peace lies in moderation and balance. While haste complicates life’s decisions, choices made with wisdom and patience always lead to the best results. The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes the significance of patience, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described forbearance as one of the finest traits of a believer. Hence, it is essential to adopt reflection, prudence, and patience at every step.
This paper will shed light, in the light of the Qur’an, on the concept of haste, and it will also present the views of the exegetes concerning the haste of Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him).
