Abstract

A couple's commitment to forming a household begins with harmony through several pre-marital stages. These stages are related to local wisdom that must be considered important to prevent early divorce. The current study aimed to revive a pearl of local wisdom, namely merasi, to revitalize it in order to find the harmony of a mate and make efforts to prevent early divorce. Additionally, the study employed a qualitative method for data analysis through observation, literature review, and content analysis of local wisdom and Islamic law. The study was conducted using deductive and inductive methods in placing the practice of merasi as an acculturation of Islamic teachings. The impact of globalization, on the culture of individualism and hedonistic lifestyles, has caused an increase in the cases of early divorce. The incompatibility of married couples is one of the most common causes of early divorce, which should have been identified by the practice of merasi. This practice needs to be revitalized in order to reduce the divorce rate among young couples. Acculturation is related to the practice of merasi as a local wisdom aimed to organize the household.

Research Objective

To revive the local wisdom practice of merasi to revitalize its role in finding couple compatibility and making efforts to prevent early divorce, especially in the context of acculturation with Islamic teachings.

Methodology

Qualitative method employed for data analysis, utilizing observation, literature review, and content analysis of local wisdom and Islamic law. Deductive and inductive methods were used to place the practice of merasi as an acculturation of Islamic teachings. Data collection involved observing merasi activities, reviewing literature (books, journals, reports), and analyzing content for suitability with Islamic teachings.

Discussion

The abandonment of traditional pre-marital stages like merasi due to globalization, individualism, and puritanical views has contributed to rising divorce rates among young couples. Revitalizing merasi integrates effort (ikhtiar) with faith, aligning with Islamic principles like Tafa-ul and al-mashalih al-mursalah (public interest). The practice, involving a three-stage calculation based on name letters resulting in "Step," "Mate," or "Death," serves as an important benchmark for compatibility, complementing spiritual guidance like Istikharah.

Key Findings

Incompatibility is the most common cause of early divorce (63.41% of cases in 2023). The merasi practice, which assesses compatibility using fa-al science based on name letters, falls under the permissible category of Tafa-ul (seeking good fortune) rather than prohibited Tathayyur (unlucky assumptions/shirk). Revitalizing merasi before the marriage contract is crucial for early divorce prevention and forming harmonious households.

Conclusion

The revitalization of the merasi practice is essential as an endeavor (ikhtiar) and an early prevention measure against divorce stemming from incompatibility. When framed as Tafa-ul and integrated with Islamic legal principles, merasi helps ensure couples are compatible before the marriage contract, fostering the desired harmony (sakinah).
