Abstract

Lexicology is the study of word meanings and origins. It is the branch of linguistics which deals with the use and meanings of words and the relationships between items of vocabulary, lexicon is a dictionary or a reference book that alphabetically lists words, phrases and their meanings, definitions or translations of a language. Similarly, lexicon of Hadith is the entire stock of words belonging to the branch of knowledge which deals with the thorough and in-depth understanding of the proverbial expressions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.The main purpose of this article is to study the Urdu Lexicons of Hadith and its related works available in the market. The article gives a brief overview of the topic, states the purpose and methodology of this treatise, indicates the need and importance of Hadith Lexicons and discusses the difficulties in producing lexicons. A summary of the contributions and works done on Urdu lexicons of Hadith in Asian sub-continent has been provided along with an analysis to encourage the scholars for more contribution to this important area of knowledge. In this article, one major work done on Urdu Lexicon of Hadith has been identified and attributed. Ten other works have been reviewed and acknowledged as secondary works related to Urdu lexicons of Hadith. Critical comments on previous work, suggestions andrecommendations for future work are part of this article.
