ABSTRACT This study compares the results of tests on wooden tool handles made from 8 local and two imported species of hickory and ash, in terms of their breaking strength and stiffness. Of the 8 local timber species, white bakain was found to give best overall performance for tool handles. The effect of various factors such as orientation of growth rings in relation to the direction of loading in strength tests on handles and the mechanical properties of wood on the ultimate strength of the handle was also studied.
