ABSTRACT To evaluate the efficacy of water conservation techniques for the establishment of forest plantation, an experiment was laid out at two sites, Kharian and Raisan (Kohat). Microcatchments, conservation trenches, gradonii and simple pits were used for planting Eucalyptus canaldulensiss, Leucaena leucocephala, Acacia nilotica and A. modesta seedlings. Preliminary results based on the years data are presented in this article. All the three techniques proved effective for the establishment of tree species. Both the survival as well as growth rate of seedlings planted with water conservation techniques was almost double as compares to those planted in simple pits at both sites. At kharian the seedlins of E. camaldulensis showed highly positive response to water conservation techniques by attaining three times height of seedlings planted in simple pits. The response of A. modesta was however, low. A. nilotica suffered frost damage at Raisan.
