Abstract

Mathematics is an important discipline of study. Students mostly faced problems in understanding mathematical concepts. There are many reasons behind these problems. Many methods and techniques have been used to find the nature of the difficulties faced by students. The cognitive diagnostic assessment is a relatively new method of formative evaluation. The present study was aimed at finding the cognitive problems of students in some topics of matrices like “Order of Matrices, Addition and Multiplication of Matrices” by using a new method called the facet method. For that purpose, Grade 9 students of the district Rawalpindi were selected as a sample. The test was developed and administered by the researcher. Data were analyzed by using a rubric made by the researcher and tabulated in percentages. The findings of the study revealed that students faced cognitive problems at the knowing, applying, and reasoning levels about the order of matrices, addition, and multiplication of matrices. On the basis of the findings, it was concluded that serious attention should be given to the cognitive problems of the students. Since one mathematical concept is related to the other. Based on findings it was recommended that detailed investigations may be required to dig out the causes of the cognitive problems of students in certain topics of matrices like “The order of matrices, addition, and multiplication of matrices.||Keywords: The cognitive Diagnostic assessment, Facet Method, Order of Matrices, Addition and Multiplication of Matrices.
