Abstract

These studies were conducted at Biochemistry Section AARI, Faisalabad during 1999 and 2000. Eight mango Mangifera indica L. varieties viz.; Malda, Langra, Dosehri, Sindhri, Anwar Retaul, Chaunsa, Fajri and Desi were tested for their physico-chemical characteristics. Fajri surpassed in fruit weight followed by Sindhri and Langra. Maximum pulp (80%) was observed in Langra, Dosehri and Anwar Retau! had higher TSS. Total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugars of these varieties significantly differed from one another and were not affected by the years. Vitamin C {ascorbic acid) content was higher in Langra. TSS/acidity and sugar/acidity ratios were more in Anwar Retaul and Fajri followed by Chaunsa and Dosehri. Desi mango gave poor quality fruit due to low TSS, sugars, high acidity and low ratios of TSS/acidity and sugar/acidity.
