Abstract

This paper explores the role of teacher collaboration and professional development within the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), specifically highlighting the significance of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) within the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT). Drawing on a synthesis of existing literature, the paper examines the theoretical underpinnings of teacher collaboration and professional development, emphasizing their crucial role in enhancing teaching practices and fostering continuous growth among educators. Furthermore, the paper delves into the unique structure and functions of JALT SIGs, elucidating how these specialized groups facilitate meaningful collaboration, knowledge exchange, and skill enhancement within the TESOL community. Through a comprehensive analysis, this paper sheds light on the ways in which participation in SIG activities contributes to the professional growth and efficacy of TESOL practitioners.
